Departments Detail

The Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) provides the highest standard of care to the patients. The department was established in August 2013 with latest state-of-the-art C-Cam gamma camera from Siemens, which is highly specialized to do cardiac scanning. Its integrated software is designed for analysis of ejection fraction and wall motion as well. The Department has full time Consultant Nuclear Physician, Technologists, Medical Physicist and NM nursing staff.

Nuclear Cardiac Scan:

A nuclear heart scan is a non-invasive procedure. A test that provides important information about the health of your heart. For this test, a safe, radioactive substance called a tracer is injected into your bloodstream through a vein. The tracer travels to your heart and releases energy. Special cameras outside of your body detect the energy and use it to create pictures of your heart.

The following procedures we being performed here:

1. Thallium-201 Gated Myocardial perfusion studies (with physical / pharmacological / dual stress protocols).
2. Myocardial viability assessment.
3. Myocardial Perfusion Studies (MIBI Stress & MIBI Rest)
4. MUGA scan / equilibrium blood pool scintigraphy.

Indications For Thallium Imaging:

Assessment of myocardial viability
Diagnosis of myocardial infarction
Diagnosis of myocardial ischemia
Risk stratification and prognosis following myocardial infarction
Assessment of thrombolytic therapy
For detection of stress-induced ischemia with exercise

Note:
To avoid inconvenience, reconfirmation regarding the scan appointment is advised, 24 hours before the actual date of the test; as the radio pharmaceutical used is imported from abroad and delays in delivery or non-availability may affect the scan schedule.
